Winter Solstice
Science Alert: Dive into the Solstice Celebration!
The solstice marks a moment of cosmic magic, where the Earth's axis hits extremes with the sun. It's a fleeting moment, but oh so significant! In one hemisphere, it's winter - cosy nights and chilly days. In the other, it's summer - sunshine and warmth abound!
Around the winter solstice, get ready for the longest night of the year and those oh-so-short days. The sun reaches its lowest peak in the sky, promising the beginning of longer days ahead. As we move from summer to winter, the days shrink and the nights grow longer. But fear not! From the winter solstice to summer, it's a gradual shift towards brighter days and shorter nights.
Picture this: the sun's glow fading, nights stretching longer, and life feeling the chill. But fear not! With the solstice comes the ultimate plot twist: days stretch, nights shrink, temperatures soar, and life bursts forth anew!
It's a cosmic makeover, folks! As the solstice works its magic, nature hits the refresh button. Days become longer, nights shorter, and the warmth of the sun rekindles the spark of life everywhere you look. Join us in celebrating this epic turnaround, where the world transforms from chilly to cheery in the blink of an eye!
The Yule Tree
Enter the Enchanted World of Evergreen Trees!
Behold the guardians of nature, the timeless symbols of hope and renewal! Even in the depths of winter's chill, these majestic evergreens stand tall, reminding us of the promise of sunnier days and the resurgence of life.
But wait, there's more! As the solstice approaches, these resilient trees transform into beacons of celebration. Adorned with wishes for the new year, they sparkle with candles symbolizing warmth, fruits representing abundance, and precious metals heralding prosperity. Some even venture indoors, bridging the gap between human and fairy realms in a harmonious embrace.
Yet, beware of the shadow of change! In the new age, what was once homage to nature became an act of betrayal. The forest's guardian fell to the ax, hope withered away, and from its remains, a sacrificial log was born, destined to fuel the fires of winter's hearth. Join us as we uncover the mysteries of tradition, transformation, and the enduring spirit of nature!
The (other) Christmas Big One
He is a character of European folklore whose origin goes back to various stories throughout the continent. Currently, it is a very old man, almost eternal, who has not cut his hair for centuries and has everything lose and tangled. He is fat as another person could not be for what (or since), usually, he spends his time sitting.
He works once a year for the love of art because he doesn’t charge more than the will. On the other hand, he has numerous slaves who serve and refresh him throughout the year. These slaves, some elves, and other humans build games, toys and other artefacts that El Gordo gives later, remaining with the gratitude of the gifted people.
In his youth, he settled in Navarra where he worked for some years as a coal worker. He lived in the mountains and went down to the villages only very sporadically. Given his scruffy appearance and his sullen attitude, he frightened the children, who were hiding from him. He became famous for his good eating and drinking, which gave him the appearance of the barrel he has now.
He later settled in Anatolia, where his parents had numerous possessions. He then changed his gardened worker’s clothes for a sumptuous Turkish outfit that, over the years, did not distinguish much from his predecessor. It is said that after the death of his parents, he gave away his property and was ordained a priest. More possibly, what he did was squander his inheritance and drain the bulk of his debts by posing as a monk. Then he gave three gold bags to three sisters whose father had no resources. For which he entered through the window of the house, with nocturnality and joy. Looking back it seems obvious that he was looking for something else from the sisters since he could not deliver any gold because by then he had already lost his fortune.
After the incident, he left Turkey and travelled north. And it was along the way that he enslaved some elves and humans whom he encountered during his trip. Wandering across the continent, it did not stop until the valleys and mountains became a flat sea of ice. Once in the most remote of Lapland, he had his slaves domesticate some reindeer and build a sledge to move. There he changed his clothes again choosing the colours of Amanita muscaria, the favourite food of his flying reindeer.
At some point, it was considered advantageous to ally with an American multinational that, in exchange for some coins and pouch padding, used it to gain recognition and broad benefits. The fame he got led him to the big and the small screen in all kinds of B series movies.
The three wise men
That there were neither three, nor kings, nor magicians. Rather an indeterminate number of astrologers brought three gifts. Perhaps followers of Zoroaster mixed their prophecy about a saviour who would be born of a virgin with the Jewish legend of a messiah who would be born (not precisely of any virgin) to rule the world. Later identified as a kind of “Shem, Cam and Japheth”: the representation of the three human races. That, again, neither are three nor are races, but that is another story.
Christmas lottery
The Extraordinary Christmas Sweepstakes of Spain, known as El Gordo de Navidad, is the second oldest lottery in the world that has taken place continuously, only surpassed by the Dutch Staatsloterij. She was not arrested during the civil war or during the subsequent dictatorship. It is the lottery with the largest total prize fund, and not in vain almost the entire population of the country participates. Although having literally tens of thousands of prizes and a multitude of winners, each winner does not receive an excessive amount.
Decoration and gifts
When winter comes, there is little to do in the countryside. Snow covers the ground and freezes the earth. Plants and animals die or sleep. People shelter in their homes, and families get together after spending separate months. And there is nothing to do. In the beginning, most entertain themselves by giving away things that each one has been finding or manufacturing in the previous months; others prefer to make something during the winter itself and exchange gifts at the end of it. Then, part of the time is dedicated to decorating the house because, since you are going to spend so much time locked up, it is better to have it beautiful. In any case, this lasted little and to relieve the cold, everyone swells to eat and drink, which always heats the gut and encourages morale.
