Silicone Toy Firmness Guide: How to Choose Your Perfect Hardness
Firmness Guide
Choosing the right silicone firmness changes how a toy feels, bends, compresses, and responds during use. This guide explains the hardness options available for Love Smiths products and how to understand them in practical terms.
Quick Firmness Summary
- Extra Soft (00-20): plush, squishy, and forgiving. Used only for masturbators.
- Soft (~4A): flexible, gentle, and easier to compress.
- Medium (~8A): balanced firmness with comfortable resistance.
Important: The bigger the toy, the firmer it will feel in practice, even if the silicone hardness is technically the same. Size, thickness, shape, and internal volume all affect the final sensation.
How to Choose the Hardness of Your Sex Toy
One of the most important criteria when choosing a silicone sex toy is hardness. Firmness affects usability, comfort, bend, pressure, and the general feel of the product in your hand and during use.
Softer silicone compresses more easily and feels more forgiving. Firmer silicone gives more structure, pressure, and stability. Choosing the right firmness depends on the toy type, the size, your experience level, and the sensation you prefer.
The Hardnesses We Offer
We work with several silicone firmness levels depending on the product type and technical limitations of the mould.
- Medium (~8A) — our balanced option for many toys.
- Soft (~4A) — more flexible and compressible.
- Extra Soft (00-20) — reserved exclusively for masturbators.
By default, each toy is made with a specific firmness selected for its design. Some products can be personalised, but there are restrictions.
In general, the larger the toy, the softer the maximum usable firmness becomes. For example, Hard (~16A) cannot be used for very large toys because the final piece may become too rigid, difficult to demould, or uncomfortable to use.
Extra Soft is reserved for masturbators because it is designed to feel plush, flexible, and gentle around penetrable internal structures.
What Each Firmness Means
Before holding the product in your hand, the easiest way to understand silicone hardness is to compare it with familiar body tissue or everyday objects.
Our silicone firmness levels are close to the softness and resistance found in parts of the human body. This is one reason silicone can feel realistic while still being durable and easy to clean.
Firmness by Feel
Extra Soft
Extra Soft feels close to fatty belly tissue: plush, very compressible, and forgiving. We use it for masturbators because it creates a softer internal feel and reduces harsh pressure.
Soft
Soft silicone bends more easily and feels gentler during use. It is a good choice when you want flexibility, comfort, and a less intense pressure sensation.
Medium
Medium feels similar to relaxed muscle with some resistance to bending. It gives a balanced combination of flexibility, structure, and control.
Why Size Changes the Feeling
Silicone hardness is measured on a scale, but the number alone does not tell the whole story. A small toy in Medium may feel quite flexible, while a large toy in the same Medium firmness may feel much firmer because there is more silicone resisting movement.
Thickness, shape, length, diameter, and internal structure all affect how firm the product feels in practice.
Simple rule: the larger and thicker the toy, the firmer it will feel during use, even if the silicone hardness number stays the same.
Production Limits
Very large toys cannot always be produced in higher hardness levels. If a large product is too firm, it may become difficult or impossible to remove safely from the mould without damaging the toy or the mould.
This is why some firmness options may not be available for certain sizes, shapes, or product categories. When a firmness option is restricted, it is usually because the material, design, and mould process would not give a reliable final result.
Final Advice
If you are unsure, Medium is usually the safest balanced choice for many silicone toys. Choose Soft if you prefer more flexibility and comfort. Choose Hard only if you already know you want stronger structure and pressure. For masturbators, Extra Soft is used when the goal is a plush and forgiving internal feel.
The best firmness is not always the hardest or the softest one. It is the firmness that matches the toy design, your body, and the sensation you want.
